Returning to University accommodation

Your return date will be determined by your first scheduled teaching commitment, which will be communicated to you directly by your course tutor.

To help stagger the return of students to our campuses, you should schedule your arrival as close as possible to your first in-person session. If you are unable to arrange a lateral flow rapid test in your locality before returning to campus – and therefore need to use our LRV Swabbing Centre – please book a test for the Tuesday or Wednesday before your first on-campus session and schedule your return accordingly.

Before travelling to University-managed or -owned accommodation, you must confirm the date of your first on-campus session. The ResLife team will contact you directly with information about your supported return, the Rent Reduction Scheme, and what that will mean for you.

When travelling to University, we advise you to use private transportation wherever possible. If you do not have access to private transportation, please ensure you follow the latest travel guidance available on gov.uk. Please do not travel if you are self-isolating or have tested positive for COVID-19.

Please note that the UK Government has introduced a new £800 fine for those attending house parties, including in halls of residence, which will double for each repeat offence to a maximum level of £6,400. These fines will apply to those who attend illegal gatherings of more than 15 people from outside their household.

If you are returning to University-managed or owned accommodation, please ensure you refamiliarise yourself with the latest guidance shared by our ResLife team. Whether in accommodation or on campus, we can all help to protect our students, staff and local communities by continuing to adhere to the latest COVID-secure guidelines.

University Rent Reduction Scheme

Staffordshire University is introducing a rent reduction scheme for University-managed and -owned accommodation, in a bid to ensure that our students are not unfairly disadvantaged by the latest national lockdown restrictions.

This scheme applies to students with University Accommodation Contracts for our on-campus accommodation in Stoke-on-Trent (including College Court) and Stafford (including Stafford Court), and who are unable to make use of their residences between 4 January and 22 February 2021 due to the current national lockdown restrictions.

We are in the process of creating a simple online form, which will enable you to apply for the equivalent of a six-week reduction for your second-term accommodation fee. To allow time for the application process and for us to apply these reductions, we have also delayed the second term’s rent payment date until Monday 1 March 2021.

Our ResLife team will contact students in University-managed and -owned accommodation with further information on how to apply for our rent reduction scheme in due course.

Students who are using their University-managed and -owned accommodation will continue to be charged rent, as per their contracts.

While the information above applies specifically to University-managed and -owned accommodation, Staffordshire University and its Students’ Union understand that a lot of students live in private rented accommodation. Collectively, we are committed to representing your interests and we will reach out to landlords to request support our students during this time. The Students’ Union Advice Centre has also developed useful resources to enable you to take action directly with your landlord.

University-managed accommodation

To ensure the safety and wellbeing of our new student intake, we have made a number of changes to ensure our University-managed accommodation is COVID-secure, while remaining a brilliant and friendly space to live, work, relax and socialise. 

The measures we have taken include reducing the occupancy levels in our existing student flats and houses, so that you have plenty of room and the potential risk of infection is reduced. We have also allocated accommodation to students undertaking similar courses to create protected households – or ‘bubbles’ – helping to foster a supportive living, learning community.

Private accommodation

While the measures outlined above relate specifically to accommodation managed by Staffordshire University, we are continuing to work closely with our Students’ Union to encourage private landlords to ensure they are prioritising the health, safety and wellbeing of our students.

Students living in private accommodation should seek guidance on their accommodation position from their landlords. The University and the Students’ Union will also continue to liaise with private landlords to remind them of their responsibilities to our students. If you encounter any difficulties with private landlords, you can contact the Staffordshire University Students’ Union Advice Centre on 01782 294629, or by emailing sac@staffs.ac.uk. Our team are in place to offer support, guidance and advocacy wherever necessary.

Will I still be able to socialise?

Regardless of whether you are living in University-managed or private accommodation, please rest assured that these measures are not designed to prevent safe socialising and interaction between students. We know that the relationships you form with your peers form a vital part of the student experience, which is why we are working closely with our Students’ Union to deliver COVID-secure social events throughout the 2020/21 academic year and beyond.

We encourage you to take advantage of these opportunities, and to socialise with your fellow students outside of your accommodation, in line with the latest public health guidance issued by the UK government and other relevant authorities.

What if I need to self-isolate?

If you are told to self-isolate and you would feel more comfortable doing so at your family home, you can travel there by car if it is safe to do so. If you are not able to relocate to a different address, or if you would prefer to self-isolate in your term-time accommodation, our team will be on hand to provide the guidance and support you need.

If you are a student and have been advised by a physician or NHS guidance to self-isolate, please notify us by completing the COVID-19 Self Isolation Declaration Form  and calling the Staffordshire University Coronavirus Helpline on 01782 298500. All students living in University-managed accommodation will have received information about the self-isolation procedures and provision available for them. Please check your student email account for this guidance.
